Narrabeen Lakes Chamber of Commerce

Updates from our President Judi Gurd-Chapman

Annual General Meeting December 2007

President Report

Congratulations and thank you to the 2007 committee for all the hard work and support for this 2007 year.

This has been a very successful year in terms of new members, new events, activities and marketing imitative. e.g. Business on the Beach

The Chambers web site has been successful in helping up to 20 users per day to gain local information and to give our businesses an opportunity to be in the public eye at no extra cost above membership.

This year Osborne Yuille continue to support us and the community on a pay by month basis. I thank this company for their support and know that we have added so much to their branding by continually presenting them to the public on banners, on flyers, in the local newspapers on our chamber page and other activities.

The Chamber of Commerce pages in both the Northern Beaches Weekender and the Manly Daily have contributed to the Awareness in the community of all the work the Chamber of Commerce does as well as giving each of our member businesses the opportunity to have free editorial on themselves and their business, our personal touch which seems to work very well.

This year saw the Chamber contribute over $3,000 dollars to the South Narrabeen Surf Club to sponsor children from less fortunate communities. The building of a supportive relationship between the Chamber and the Surf Club led to the Surf Club President offering the club premises to the Chamber as a home base for meetings.

North Narrabeen Shopping centre received a new footpath and various works to enhance the area thank you to the ground work by Jane Symonds our Marketing co-ordinator of last year. A big thank you to Pittwater Council whose works crew worked through rainy days and was mindful of the inconvenience to shop owners and operators.

Warringah Council finally came to the party with a revamp of the area outside Narrabeen Post Office after much letter writing and meetings with Council Staff. The area now outside the Post Office also boasts bike racks, more seating and more garbage bins. Bike racks were also placed outside the Westpac Bank and on Pittwater Road.
Warringah Council helped with new signage that was supplied by the Roads and Traffic Authority. Narrabeen finally had a suburb sign and street signs showing designated parking areas for local and visitors alike.

Planter Boxes were discussed at various times through the year and a letter to Warringah council got permission for advertisers to place an A4 size plate on the boxes on the footpath sign. Fairies garden service undertook plantings in a number of the boxes however they were vandalized shortly after and The Garden Fairies pulled out of this venture.

Lighting was updated in some areas of Berry reserve car park and the toilet block. Talks regarding another toilet block on the south side of the park are still with Warringah council. Talks also centered on footpath maintenance which Warringah Council has been updating over the last year.

Blue Sky markets have endeavored to help the chamber with free access to all markets which Chamber has taken advantage of by providing a voice for businesses every second month at a mini business Expo.
The Chamber allows Blue Sky Markets to use the name Summerfest as part of their summer festival.

Lighting in the trees of Narrabeen did not eventuate due to the difficulty of   access to trees and the cost to the Chamber for electrical works and maintenance. However trees in the North Narrabeen shopping area were trimmed thank you to Pittwater Council.

5/9/07 Update on Narrabeen and surrounds

Warringah and Pittwater councils have been awarded a grant of 1.9 million, which will be used to restore Narrabeen Lagoon Catchments Area. This grant will support the existing restoration programs at Narrabeen Lagoon by focusing on Middle Creek, Mullet Creek and Nareen Creek which urgently require resources and remediation works.

The program will integrate a number of projects already in use in the Narrabeen Lagoon Catchments Area including increase biodiversity in the catchment, reduce stormwater pollution and a targeted education campaign.

It is with great pleasure I announce the opening of the upgraded recreational area near Narrabeen Post office.

With thanks to Warringah Council and Staff, the gardens are now an inviting and user friendly area for the community to rest, relax and take sustenance.

Three sets of Bike racks are now available for bike riders to secure their bikes when visiting the local shopping centre.

The addition of new and larger bins located outside Gloria Jeans,Chickens Plus and through the seating area is to accommodate the large amount of refuse that is produced by the restaurants with take away menus and which their cliental take away to be disposed of into public garbage facilities.

The Chamber of Commerce and Council ask the community to take pride in this lovely area by continuing to keep it looking clean and tidy.

NOTICE OF WORKS BY WARRINGAH COUNCIL
The Narrabeen Lakes Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the upgrade of the areas outside the Narrabeen post office and the neighboring restaurant area on Pittwater road at Narrabeen.

The work shall commence on Monday the 25th June and is expected to take 2-3 weeks.

The scope of the work includes new gardens and repaving, some seating will be changed and the tables and bench seats upgraded. Trees will be culled and a new lighting system introduced.

Warringah council’s contractor will make every effort to keep a clear and safe walkway for the public as each section is being done.

The Chamber of Commerce has worked hard with council to renew this area, please make it as easy as possible for them to get the work done quickly, safely and with minimal fuss so that we can all use this great outdoor area more productively.

Welcome to the new Narrabeen Identity sign on the corner of Wetherill Street and Pittwater Road,Narrabeen.
Also as promised the RTA has placed parking signs around Narrabeen Shopping centre, now directing traffic to Lagoon Street, Wellington Street and Berry Reserve car parks. A big thank you to Bob Pigott and Warringah Council for their help in securing these signs.

21/5/07
I had a meeting with Warringah council today regarding lighting and toilets in Berry Reserve. We have one resident who has objected to lighting up the park and we need to work with the community to ensure that we are speaking on behalf of those who use the Park regularly and the residents. I spoke to many of the mums on my walk through the park about the toilet situation and this first hand knowledge is important for council to know that the community is in desperate need of these facilities.

Warringah council will look into how important the need is and what funds are available, when this has been submitted to the works programme. The council is looking at various alternatives to where the toilets will be situated and also the aesthetics of a such a building. Many issues need to be addressed including the loss of areas visible to residents living near the lake at the south end.

The matter is under consideration and we will be updating when information becomes available.

16/5/07
Warringah Council and the Chamber of Commerce has Inspected the trees outside Gloria Jeans and Chickens Plus at Narrabeen Shopping Centre. The Council have consented to culling back the trees, this should happen in 6-8 weeks.

"I have been in discussion with Warringah council about updating the gardens, repainting the seats, updating the lighting and generally changing the look of that area outside the post office. I have had meetings with council last week and spoken with the Landscape architect as to the types of plants that will be available for planting. The council is keen to go ahead with this project before the end of the financial year as they have funds left over. We shall be removing the seats from outside Gloria Jeans and transferring them to the seated garden area therefore enabling more available seating for those of the community who are wishing to take advantage of the food restaurants nearby. I have a meeting with the Westpac bank and the council on Monday afternoon re lights in the trees and we are hoping the bank will let us tap into their electricity supply. Also looking at putting lights outside Bodyboards, which has already been given approval to.

I have spoken to council re the garbage tins and also spoken to the garbage contractor, I am aware that rats sometimes are around the garbage in the early hours of the morning. Council hesitate to bait them as some are of the native species and are protected. However they are looking at the garbage bin situation and even looking to put in recycle bins.
Re the Graffiti, Council says they have tried all the available paints and believe they are too costly and need to much renewing after every clean."
